Since 2002, Steven Sussman has passionately photographed jazz musicians in concert, capturing the essence of their music through his lens. By day, Sussman is  radiologist in New York City, specializing in imaging the human body. However, it’s behind the camera where he expresses his deep appreciation for jazz, transforming moments on stage into vivid visual tributes. He is a regular contributor  Downbeat and his photography has appeared in Jazz Times, Jazziz, The NY Jazz Record, Jazz Inside, Jersey Jazz, The Hartford Courant, The NY Times, and Vogue.

In 2021, Sussman received the Lona Foote-Bob Parent Award for Career Achievement in Photography from the Jazz Journalists Association, honoring his outstanding contributions to jazz photography. Jazz critic Owen McNally praised Sussman’s work, noting, “With their evocative use of substance and shadow, the seen and the implied, his images are lyrical, luminous impressions of deeply felt, fleeting moments. All his tone poems are spontaneously composed in the pure jazz spirit of a Bill Evans, Miles, or Trane. The only difference is that Sussman's instrument is a camera instead of a piano, trumpet, or saxophone.”

For over 25 years, Sussman has also produced an annual benefit, Jazz for Juvenile Diabetes, inviting his favorite musicians to perform in Hartford CT and raising nearly $500,000 for JDRF, the leading organization supporting diabetes research. A member of Nikon Professional Services, Sussman currently uses Nikon Z series cameras and lenses, working only with available light to capture the natural atmosphere of each performance.
